How should you detangle hair to limit breakage?
Start at the ends and work up. The American Academy of Dermatology says wet hair is delicate, so use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush.
Why wet hair breaks
Hair is delicate when wet. AAD recommends a wide-tooth comb rather than a brush.
The method
Slowly comb the ends first, then keep combing higher. Straight hair can dry a bit before combing. Thick, curly hair is easiest to comb in the shower with conditioner in.
When to stop
Stop a product and see a board-certified dermatologist if you get burning, swelling, blistering, hives, or symptoms that get worse. Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swelling of the face or lips.
